BT to trial one gigabit broadband

The BBC has put this piece of news on their site yesterday (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-11911478) and I find it laughable. Given the fact that I am a BT customer and experience speeds of up to 5 meg, the fact that BT wish to attempt this before trying to sort out everyone else’s connection speed is seriously putting the cart before the horse. I understand the need to test the boundaries and this is part of producing a better product, but seriously, let’s look at some of the facts:

  • People are still connecting to the Internet on extremely slow broadband speeds
  • Some are not able to connect, because they live in remote or rural areas
  • There’s a lot of hype around up to 20 meg speeds, but just who are these lucky individuals

So, if you are an employee of BT (and I used to be) please explain to us why we have people throughout the UK connecting in such antiquated ways, when part of the Internet plan is to get everyone online.

Oh, and BT Infinity, do you call your new fibre optic plan BT Infinity, because infinity is the deadline for completion?
