Intergenerational Project: Postcards of Your Past

Postcards of your Past is a project that spans different generations, focusing on the older community’s contribution to young people’s knowledge and experiences through storytelling.

Older people have an abundance of stories to tell, about their lives and the areas where they grew up and Postcards of your Past is an avenue for them to use to express this to the younger generation.

We want to encourage the more mature among us to find an object or picture of something that highlights an event in their past and with help from ViSTA (Voluntary Sector Training Alliance) and Chypps (Children and Young Peoples Partnership in Somerset) have their experiences immortalised on a digital postcard with a narrative attached for all to see.

We will then organise a meeting with the local school to bring the two generations together. Armed with their postcard and props we will encourage the older generation to talk to the children about their stories, providing the children with an insight into their experiences and giving the younger generation a comparison to their lifestyles.

We will provide training in storytelling and will support the storytellers to create their own postcard on a computer, a copy of which can be kept.

Postcards of your Past has been set up to bridge the gap between generations. It is our intention that the older generation will have a new perspective on the lives of the younger generation and that young people have a respect for what their elders have to offer our communities.
